Letters

Remus Lupin stooped over his desk and ran his hand through his hair. He glanced over what he had written.

Dearest Gladys,

On this Valentine’s Day, I wish to take this moment to let you know how dear you are to my heart. Your letters have sustained me through my darkest hours. Now, as I travel the road to recovery, your continued support means more than ever.

Yours in Admiration,

Gilderoy Lockhart

P.S. I was most distressed to hear of your beloved poodle’s illness. My thoughts are with you through this most trying of times.

A knock on the door caused Remus to look up. There was Lockhart, dressed in pale lilac robes. “Lupin, once you finish responding to those letters, another stack just arrived.”

“Mister Lockhart, you said I could leave at seven,” Remus said at once, looking at the clock on the wall that now showed eight. “My wife is waiting for me at home.”

“Then she’ll just have to wait, Lupin. I need you to finish these letters tonight,” Lockhart told him. “I have a party to attend. Lock up when you’re done.”

“Yes, sir,” Remus mumbled.

He watched Lockhart leave the room and with a sigh, threw down his quill in frustration. It would take hours to finish responding to these letters. And Tonks would be at home, waiting for him, so they could celebrate their first Valentine’s Day as a married couple.

But at the same time, he did feel some gratitude towards Lockhart for being willing to hire him in the first place. Lockhart was somewhat of a medical miracle, as no one expected him to ever recover his memory. Instead of going back to his old life of exploiting witches and wizards for his own profit, Lockhart realized his lifelong dream, and started Lockhart Hair Care Products. Remus was Lockhart’s personal assistant, and spent a great deal of time reading and answering his fan mail.

Remus briefly wondered if he could charm his quill to answer all of the letters for him, but he knew that was impossible. Instead, he headed to the fireplace to tell Tonks not to expect him for a while.

~~~~~
Glancing at the clock, Remus saw that it was now eleven o’clock at night. Thankfully, there was only one letter left and then he could get home and celebrate what was left of Valentine’s Day. He picked up the letter and read:
Dear Mister Lockhart,
You probably don’t remember me, but almost seven years ago, right after I graduated Hogwarts, I saw you at the Leaky Cauldron. I was the witch with the pink hair and the Weird Sisters t-shirt. I sometimes wonder if you ever think back on that conversation. It’s one that I’ll remember forever.
Remus paused in his reading for a moment after glancing at the signature. Tonks sent Gilderoy bloody Lockhart a Valentine’s Day card. He could hardly believe that she, of all women, would have fallen under Lockhart’s spell. Remus never mentioned to Tonks that one of his responsibilities was answering Lockhart’s fan mail. She would have no idea that her husband would be the one reading this.
You see, that one conversation changed my entire life. I told you that I had been accepted into the Auror training program, but was thinking of following the Weird Sisters on their European tour for a year instead.
You told me that Europe was a brilliant idea because witches simply don’t make good Aurors. I then proceeded to throw my drink in your face.
The constriction in his chest seemed to be easing. This seemed much more like a letter Tonks would have written.
I had actually already written the letter to the Auror training program, turning down their offer. That was, until we talked. That very moment, I knew I was destined to be an Auror.
A year after training ended, I was asked to join the Order of the Phoenix, where I met the man who would become my husband, a man I simply can’t envision life without. Everything I have, my husband, my career, my friends, in some odd way, I owe to you. I just wanted to thank you and to let you know that I will certainly be buying products from your new hair care line.
Cheers!
Nymphadora Tonks-Lupin
Remus sucked gently on the end of his quill, trying to figure out exactly what to write. With a flourish Lockhart himself would have been proud, he placed his quill on a fresh piece of parchment and wrote:
Dearest Nymphadora,
One of the greatest joys in my life is to know that I have helped change the life of one of my admirers. So I’m sure you can imagine my delight upon reading your letter. However, do not thank me for the gifts in your life.
A weaker witch might have agreed to my ill-advised comments and gone to Europe. You made the choice to fight. Not I. Also, as a believer in fate, if you had gone to Europe, somehow, you still would have met and fallen in love with your husband, just in a different way.
From your last name, I wonder if you are married to Remus Lupin, my trusted employee? If you are, I know how loved you are by the way Lupin’s face lights up when he talks of you.
And on this Valentine’s Day I wish you all the love and happiness in the world.
Sincerely,
Gilderoy Lockhart
P.S. The robe you ruined by throwing that drink cost seventeen galleons. I will gladly accept compensation in either galleons or a draft from Gringotts.
As quickly as Remus could, he posted the owl and watched it fly through the window towards their small apartment in Diagon Alley.
Grabbing his cloak, Remus hurried to lock up. Now he just had to beat the owl home so he could enjoy her reaction to the letter, not to mention the forty-seven minutes left of Valentine’s Day.
Oh, this was great - I loved it.
Only one thing though - England is in Europe. Or do you mean the Continent? (Since I know some refer to the rest of Europe as such.)
Technically, yes, we're in Europe, but that doesn't mean a European tour will come to the UK. ^^
Wonderful little piece. And the letters especially were all beautifully in character for Tonks, Lupin and Lockheart. Great job!
kerrymdb[info]kerrymdb on February 21st, 2007 06:37 pm (UTC)
The letters (especially the ones Remus wrote) were so much fun to write. Thank you for reading! :)
LOL! You know, I couldn't shake the image of poor Bob Cratchit and Gilderoy as Mister Scrooge. *snicker*
kerrymdb[info]kerrymdb on February 21st, 2007 06:41 pm (UTC)
Hee! That really is a great comparison! Now I'm picturing Scrooge in lilac robes...
Thanks for reading! :)
Mrs Tater, this is hilarious, although I can't help thinking that writing letters for Lockhart is one of the most thankless jobs on Earth and wonder why you would put poor Remus through such torment! ;) Nevertheless, I really enjoyed reading this, especially Tonks's letter. I also enjoyed Remus's reply, of course. I love seeing Remus's sense of humour come out.
!
What can I say, I like to cause him misery once in a while. At least it's good, honest work. ;)
I'm glad you enjoyed the story! Letting the personalities come through the letters was fun to figure out. Thank you for reading! :)
shimotsuki[info]shimotsuki on February 11th, 2007 05:57 pm (UTC)
This was fun! Tonks sent Gilderoy bloody Lockhart a Valentine’s Day card -- hee. And it was a nice choice to have Remus's thoughts interrupt the letter a few times, so we could see his mood begin to change as he read.
I do hope he beats the owl home.
kerrymdb[info]kerrymdb on February 21st, 2007 06:56 pm (UTC)
I'm glad you thought this was fun! Figuring out Remus' thoughts during the letter was a blast. I could just see him, staring at the letter in disbelief until he finished.
Thank you for reading! :)
LOL :D Once I got over the shock of the ignominy of Remus J Lupin being (gulp) personal assistant to none other than Gilderoy Lokchart, I laughed my tail off. ;) Very cute device of Tonks sending a politely scathing letter to Lockhart and being answered by her husband. Somehow I wonder if this was her way of sending Remus a Valentine. This was a lot of fun. A real Valentine's treat! :)
kerrymdb[info]kerrymdb on February 21st, 2007 08:34 pm (UTC)
A job's a job, right? And I'm sure it is good honest work...hopefully with good pay...and benefits...
This was a lot of fun.]
Oh my goodness, I don't know whether to laugh or cry... Poor Remus, a wage slave to Gilderoy Lockheart. But his letter to Tonks was soooo sweet and funny. Great job!
lol, I love Tonks' letter to good ol' Gilderoy. The sentiment regarding Lupin is so sweet.
I almost wish we could see her reaction to said letter.
Fun ficlet!
Lockhart is such a fun character to play with, even if it is only Remus pretending to write for him! Thank you for reading! :)
I feel badly for poor Remus to be stuck with such a thankless job--but it made for a delightfully funny story!
Tonks's letter and Remus's reactions to it were priceless. Thanks for the laughs. :)
:D Hilarious idea! Remus's letter to Tonks is absolutely priceless. And I love the fact that he slipped in a little bit about himself. And the PS? So unbelievably like Lockhart.
Poor Remus...maybe he'll be able to move up the job ladder soon. ;)
Excellent job! :D
Hee! That was my favorite part of the entire fic. I pictured Kenneth Branagh saying that and got a bad case of the giggles.
Thank you for reading! :)
I loved Remus' P.S. to Tonks' letter. That's such an amazing characterization of Lockhart, even though it's technically Remus. Awesome job!
LOL, too hilarious. Poor Remus, stuck in this horrible job he's so much better than -- I agree with [info]iamweebles, it's very Scrooge/Bob Cratchitt. Remus' reply, especially his PS, is perfect. Really clever take on the prompt.
Poor Remus, what a job! Clever use of the prompt.
Thank you reading and commenting. Sorry it took forever to respond! :)
This is a really great idea. The thought of Remus being employed to answer Lockheart's fanmail is really inspired, and I loved how Remus went from alarm at the thought of Tonks possibly being a Gilderoy fangirl, to coming up with a really Marauder-esque way to play a trick on her.
Made me laugh a lot.
kerrymdb[info]kerrymdb on February 26th, 2007 08:53 am (UTC)
I think Remus is one of the only people in the world who would be grateful to be employed by Lockhart! The thought of Tonks being a secret Lockhart fangirl cracks me up. I mean, if Hermione's a fan...
Thank you for reading and commeting! :)
kerrymdb[info]kerrymdb on February 26th, 2007 08:54 am (UTC)
What a brilliant idea. I started off being so sorry for poor Remus, especially when he was panicking at the horrific prospect of Tonks being a Gilderoy fan, which makes it all the more of a Yay! moment when we learn she threw a drink at him. Both the end of her letter and Remus' reply are lovely and romantic; really heart-warming to read.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Especially the P.S! :)
kerrymdb[info]kerrymdb on February 26th, 2007 08:58 am (UTC)
I'm glad you enjoyed this! It was a lot of fun writing Tonks' letter. (especially with the word limit!) Remus' response was tricky to make it just corny enough without spreading the cheese too thick.
Thank you for reading and commenting! :)
Great job!
Firstly, I love that your prompt, "Too Much" follows right behind the prompt, "Enough." The irony. lol
This is really cleverly done. Lockheart is one of those guys you just want to throw a drink at. Lucky Tonks! In more ways than one.
Sooo, there'll be a follow-up fic entitled... "The last 47 minutes of Valentine's day"? ;)
Hmm...I think Remus told Tonks the truth about his position and then was smacked in the shoulder before he received a passionate kiss. :D
