Fic: A Matter of Opportunity
Title: A Matter of Opportunity
Author: shimotsuki
Rating & Warnings: PG; AU ("Warp and Weft" ficverse)
Prompt: chance
Word Count: 2390 words
Summary: Remus is worried about Teddy, but Tonks is worried about Remus, and circumstances lead her to try something she's never done before. She can only hope they are ready for it.
Author's Notes: I really am working on a HBP story that uses both my prompts, honestly, but this story idea jumped to the front of the queue... Acknowledgments to fernwithy for the proposal that childbearing might be impossible for a female werewolf.

Lovely look at what might-have-been which makes me think I should check out more denial-fic. Wonderful story all around!

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, at first I wasn't sure I would like denial-fic, but I keep getting plotbunnies. It's addictive (and therapeutic).

I really liked that. For one thing,I can never get enough denial fic. Also, I loved how everything wasn't immediately perfect for Remus and Tonks. I would imagine that he would be nervous about Teddy's first full moon. But it was wonderful to see how he was learning to see that Tonks really doesn't care about his being a werewolf. Lovely all around!

Thank you -- I'm glad you enjoyed this!

everything wasn't immediately perfect for Remus and Tonks

I'm really happy that you mentioned that, because I'm trying to be "responsible" about this denial ficverse (...heh), and not just assume that everything is automatically problem-free for Remus and Tonks just by virtue of surviving the battle.

I love you! That was perfect and I loved it!!!!!!!

Aw, thank you for the kind words!

You had two ideas in this fic that I absolutely adored (I loved the rest too, but these were my favorites ;D) Remus being nervous over Teddy's possibility of being a werewolf was heartbreaking and yet sooo believable. I always thought that it was a really deep-seated and important concern on Remus' part, and even if he came to terms with it being impossible, some small part of him would not accept it until the first full moon. The other was Tonks being able to see Remus in his wolf form. I am so glad you showed us the other side of his transformation, something I rarely read in fics, (they always skip to the morning after). This was a really enjoyable read! Thanks for contributing.

Thanks so much for the comments! One thing (of many, heh) that breaks my heart about R/T in DH is that Remus likely died before he had a chance to find out that Teddy wasn't a werewolf. It was fun to explore the idea of Tonks's first full-moon visit, too, because I'm sure that would've been a significant and difficult moment for them. I'm happy to hear you thought these aspects worked here.

That was so sweet!

How very like Remus to let Teddy's first full moon freak him out. I love the detail of George stoically presenting them with the potion--I really ache for poor George.

I must say, though, that your characterization of wolf!Remus was positively delightful. I rarely read wolf!Remus stories just because I normally don't care for the way he's handled, but you gave him such personality and warmth. He was still Remus!

Tonks's interactions with him were equally fun, and it was sweet to see their happy domestic scene at the end. This was a great warm-and-fuzzy little story. :)

Thanks so much! I'm really happy you thought transformed Remus was reasonable here -- I decided to interpret his PoA comment that Wolfsbane lets him "keep his mind" literally. And yeah, poor George... I think maybe he seized on the tricky brewing job as something to distract himself with. :/ Maybe Ron or Ginny helped him (maybe that's a plotbunny?).

Lots of comments here, all of which I agree with 110%. I'll just add that I am all about the denial!fic, and your "Warp and Weft" 'verse is fast becoming my favorite AU.
shimotsuki: metamorfic_moonshimotsuki on June 17th, 2008 09:59 pm (UTC)
Aw, thanks so much. Likewise, your "Grass" 'verse is one of my favorite AU indulgences. It's fun that there are so many of us who are okay with reading and writing denial!fic; I didn't expect that at first.

Great story! When I read Deathly Hallows I was in denial for months about Tonks and Lupin's deaths (still am) Brilliant idea by the way incorperating Teddy into the story like that. Poor Remus, he just needs to be more relaxed, but I can understand his worry. Oh, and I loved the part when he said, "But you kissed me when I was fuzzy." I burst out laughing. I thought that I was going to fall out of my chair. Anyway, good job and I hope you write more soon. Call me a dork, but I'm a sucker for Tonks and Lupin fanfics!
shimotsuki: metamorfic_moonshimotsuki on June 29th, 2008 03:04 am (UTC)
Thank you! I'm very happy this made you laugh. :)

I think it would take Remus a while to stop worrying after the last few years he's had, but one of the nice things about AU is that it actually gives him a chance to do that, heh.

That was wonderful, of course denial!fic is generally wonderful ;), but what I liked about this was the sense that Remus’ issues were still present, I do think that they would always be in the back of his mind until he had proof that Teddy was ok (and I think that is a perfectly natural reaction). And the fact that Tonks hadn’t yet seen the wolf was important too, in too many fics she’s rather blasé about it but I liked that she had that sense of unease about it. I always thought that the fact that she doesn’t care was more her accepting it as part of him than her not understanding the dangers. The image of the wolf thumping his tail reminding her of Padfoot brought a lump to my throat.

The wonderful last scene of Remus joking with her about her kissing the wolf was a nice touch to end it on. They’ve made in through the war (no thanks to JKR ;)), Tonks has seen the wolf and it’s not changed her reaction to him, and Teddy’s fine, and so its like Remus can finally let go of some of his worries and just enjoy his family, lovely!

I’m really enjoying the little AU-verse you’ve created and I’ve realised that you’re not on my f-list, something I mean to remedy right away, with your permission of course ;)

Thanks so much for the comments -- you've mentioned some of the things I was particularly trying to do with this, so I'm glad they came through. I'm trying to write "responsible denial!fic" (an oxymoron?) by acknowledging that simply surviving the battle wouldn't put a miraculous end to all their problems. But also, now that they have survived, and wizarding society is cleaning itself up, it seems logical that things in Remus's head would start sorting themselves out as well.

I would be very happy to be added to your f-list. :)

"But then," Remus continued, "you kissed me." The twinkle grew more pronounced. "When I was fuzzy."

This is the best line of Remus Reasoning ever. It made me fall for him just a little bit more, so adorable and funny.

As for the rest of it, I think it's wonderful and as thoroughly enjoyable on the second read as the first. You handled each of their concerns so very well, without making it melodramatic and the progress in their relationship was evident in the concessions each made to the other's worries.

I love the idea that they've created a pre-moon routine, which is just such a wonderful, peaceful image, which is even more aww-worthy with the addition of Teddy on Remus' chest.

Really, you've done such a lovely job with this, in Remus and Tonks' characterisation and the scene you've set, and with the words you've chosen. As always, I look forward to more AU from you!
shimotsuki: metamorfic_moonshimotsuki on July 6th, 2008 07:55 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the encouraging comments! I'm happy to know you thought this showed some development in their relationship without being too melodramatic. As for the pre-moon routine, I like to think at least some of DH year was a chance for them to really grow to trust each other and their marriage, and develop little family rituals like that.

wonderful story
I've always loved your writing and this is especially lovely.

I really liked that you don't explicitly state that it's the full moon right away. Using "that day" left it a little ambiguous. It could have been a big day in court regarding the remaining werewolf legislation or some happy event like a wedding with emotional overtones because of those missing. Delaying the actual discussion of the cause of Remus' worry until about the 10th paragraph built up a delicious feeling of tension and dread in me. I couldn't wait to find out what was up.

I loved how you handled the full moon discussion when it did appear. The atmosphere was so beautifully quiet, just as I imagine them--daring to express their trust and hope as well as fear and dread. This quiet sense is always characteristic of Remus, I think, and Tonks' understanding of him leads her to move into that quiet that will reassure him. You wrote that so well!

I've meant to ask if I could friend you for some time, now. Would that be alright?

Re: wonderful story
Thank you so much for leaving such a detailed and thoughtful review. I'm happy to hear that the beginning of the story built up some curiosity and tension. As for the quiet atmosphere of Tonks's conversation with Remus, both of them are still recovering from the battle -- but also, I think one of the ways that Tonks changed during HBP was in gaining a new sense of strength in stillness (if that makes any sense, heh).

And I would be delighted if you wanted to friend me!

If I was a less dignified person (...*cough, cough*) I would let out a fangirl "SQUEE.' Of course, I am *far* to mature to do that!

So.... awww! I love your werewolf!Remus, and, at the risk of sounding lazy, agree with all of the comments posted here, particularly gilpin25 and ch_arrie.

And, especially the LOL moment:

"Remus spoke, his voice low and slightly hoarse. "Dora... I'd been rather hoping you would never have to see me like that."

Tonks steeled herself and raised her head. In his eyes she saw—

—the merest trace of mild embarrassment and a little twinkle of humour.

She blinked. Where was the bitter shame? The weighty self-recrimination?

"But then," Remus continued, "you kissed me." The twinkle grew more pronounced. "When I was fuzzy."

Priceless! I particularly like how Tonks (along with the reader) is excepting angst on Remus's part... but then he calls himself *fuzzy*!

Congrats on a beautiful addition to the Warp and Weft series!

Thanks so much for the kind comments! I'm glad to know this gave you a LOL moment, hee. This was my first time writing a transformed Remus; I decided to take literally his remark in PoA that the Wolfsbane lets him keep his own mind.

I stole a link off of another's del.icio.us bookmarks. Denial is good. Your characterizations are great!

Thank you!

I have to admit that I've become a little too fond of denial, heh.
