A discussion of what we like in fanfic over at molly_coddles journal brought up the subject of summaries.

A lot of folks--myself included--seem really insecure about our abilities to write a good summary that will both accurately describe our story and draw readers in.

Maybe one week we could have a summary-writing discussion, or even a summary-writing workshop where we give a more detailed synopsis of an upcoming fic and help each other condense it down into a winning summary?

I agree; that would be helpful for me, too!

If you haven't noticed yet, they actually did start a discussion on summaries 2 or 3 weeks ago, and there are lots of interesting and helpful comments. You should go check it out. It certainly gave me some good ideas. :)

Oh, thanks! :D

Something I'm really struggling with at the moment is coming up with a title, so maybe a discussion on this at some point might be interesting.

Do other people find it easy / difficult to think of titles? Do people think of the title first or last? How important do people think the title of a fic is? What do they find inspires them when it comes to titles? That kind of thing.

K x :)

A dicussion on development of plot might be helpful. There are certain structures that one can follow. There's even software you can buy in which you plug in your characters and it produces the general outline for you (!!), i.e. chapter X needs to have a major setback for the main character, chapter Y needs to tear the lovers apart, chapter Z is the showdown with the antagonist, etc. So, how do people here construct plot? Do you do it on sheets of paper like JKR? Notecards posted on the wall so you can rearrange? Do you do it all in your head? How important to you are the standard or classic structures for plot development?

A conversation with mrstater, prompted me to wonder how people perceive the characters of Remus and Tonks in the way that they do. Whether they base their characterization off their own image of the character or is it based off the movie characterization of the same (esp. Remus)

I've been thinking ever since I wrestled with my romantic-comedy genre prompt in the All Hallows' Moon Jumble that I would love to see a discussion here on writing humour -- at any level, from the structure of the plot to, I don't know, strategies for developing recurring jokes in a fic, or one-off gags. There are many Meta authors who are brilliant with humour. But how does one plan to be funny? Especially when the goal is subtle or plot-integrated humour rather than slapstick or over-the-top crack-fic (fun though that may be)?

We need to update this index! We did cover humor writing once in a combined discussion with angst, but it's possibly the most difficult genre and one that could be well worth another discussion or twelve. ;) Thanks for your suggestion!

I think DH raised some interesting questions with regard to their relationship.

Among the ones that I find most intriguing, but certainly not the ones are:
How did Tonks deal with Remus' leaving her again, when she was so vulnerable, after Bill and Fleur's wedding? How long did Remus stay away before going back? How strained was their relationship immediately after he returned? Did he, somehow, have access to Wolfsbane, and, if not, where did he transform?

Suggestion, suggestion!
Ok, I'll take it easier... ^_^
I'm Italian, as many of you should had understood by now, I suppose (how many times did I said it? too much, that's sure!)
, and there is a question I'm really interested in: translations.

I'd like to know how many of you are translators ore translated.
From english to another language or the opposite, maybe?
How many of you have requests for your fics to be translated? Do you allow this kind of works or you refuse it?

In italian the words "to translate" and "to cheat" have the same latin origin ("TRADURRE" and "TRADIRE"): are you afraid when you agree to translation that your work will be misunderstood?

There are many problems with translation.
Some terms are too typical of a language, and they loose part af their meaning when they're translated. I think about "Ti voglio bene" in my language, that expresses a kind of love very different from "Ti amo", but it must be translated "I love you", because english has got just that.
Or "To be supposed to", that must be translated the same as "must" "have to" "might" in my language.

Then there is the question about "playing with words". For example the question "Sirius/serious", but I can think about many others.

I'm not sure this can be an interesting argument for you, but I tried, ^_-
I care about this argument because if I'll ever be able to join any event here, it will be with a translation (I write in italian), and because I usually read translation of your fics (when there are, of course!)

That was my suggest, maybe I bit confused an full of mistakes... I'm sorry as always!

I was wondering - if I had an idea for a fic (that I would write, but I'm a terrible fic writer) that I just wanted to throw out there & if anyone would want to maybe write it, where would I add that? Just curious, is all. =]
